Daryl has been Course Superintendent at Glenelg Golf Club since May 2000.
Working closely with Course Architects Crafter Mogford Golf Strategies from May 2000 until 2004, Daryl oversaw the redevelopment of the course, which resulted in a significant transformation including restoration of large areas of contrasting natural vegetation.
From a parkland style, to a course with strong links characteristics.
In the 10 years since then, the Course Enhancement Plan has resulted in continuous, strategic improvements that have seen Glenelg’s national ranking elevated from the mid 90’s to 29 (Golf Australia, 2014).
A project of major significance in this time was the development of an Aquifer Storage and Recovery Scheme, which allows local stormwater to be harvested and filtered through 1.4ha of specifically constructed wetlands before being injected into the underground aquifer for retrieval during summer irrigation. This provides Glenelg with a sustainable, high quality water source that benefits the local community and nearby marine environment.
Glenelg now has a reputation as a stern, strategic test of golf, with some of the finest playing surfaces in the country, and is a course that members proudly call their own.
Adelaide Oval has always held a special place in South Australian sporting folklore, and has held the reputation of one of the world’s most picturesque cricket grounds.
The redevelopment to a stadium of world class was always going to be scrutinised closely, with the playing surface having to cater for multiple elite level sports and events throughout the entire year.
Turfwise was engaged to provide specifications for the outfield construction, and conducted 2 years of trial work to help refine over sowing and transitional techniques.
The results have been nothing short of spectacular.
Adelaide is now proudly home to one of the world’s great stadiums that has managed to retain its unique beauty.
The City of Port Adelaide Enfield is one of Adelaide’s largest council precincts, both in population and area covered, and has dozens of sports fields and four golf courses within its boundaries.
Management of sporting facilities over such a vast area is complicated and is a stern test of the management of resources.
Turfwise provides specific management advice for two golf courses and is conducting tailored case study programs at three different sports facilities, including Port Adelaide Power’s training facility at Alberton.
Staff mentoring is a critical component of Turfwise’s engagement.
Turfwise’s training workshops with field staff ensures everyone understands the objectives of the programs, has the opportunity to provide feedback and ask questions, and is ultimately empowered to make well informed decisions.
Turfwise has been engaged since early 2014 by Adelaide Entertainment Corporations to establish and oversee management programs for the Coopers Stadium pitch, home of Adelaide United Football Club.
As well as hosting A-Leagues matches and training from October to April, and local games during winter, Coopers Stadium is a multiple use facility that hosts other sports and events throughout the year.
Good planning is critical to meet the demands of all uses, and ultimately provide the quality expected of an A-League pitch during the heat of an Adelaide summer.
